Gambia - the smiling coast of Africa!
Posted By Lynn on October 29 2009

We are now in Gambia, which is great for various reasons. Firstly, people speak English which means I no longer have to rely on Will and Tim’s sometimes dubious translations from French. Secondly the people are very friendly.

Possibly even too friendly – before I even had my passport stamped to arrive in the country the nice man at immigration proposed to me. I said I needed to think about it for a bit so he kindly gave me his phone number so I could give him a call when I made up my mind. I am not sure if he has a house with an indoor shower, but if so I am hours away from agreeing.

We are currently camping in the car park of an otherwise respectable office block – thanks to the generosity of a man known as KKB.
There is no shower here and effective washing under our shower-contraption, which cunningly uses the power from the car to pump water out of a jerry can and over one's head, can be a challenge. You hang the shower on the side of the car, connect pipes up to the jerry can, open some doors to give as much privacy as possible, get your kit off and away you go. I park the car increasingly strategically to avoid being overlooked by the security guard or causing distress to pedestrians passing by.

These problems of personal hygiene don’t seem to affect our ability to make friends around here. Tim picked up a hitchhiker the other day, I don’t know what they talked about, but she has been calling him incessantly ever since. And Will and I had our dinner paid for a couple of nights ago by the Libyan consul who overheard us talking about Atlantic Rising in the restaurant.

Glad all is going so well. You are proving to be very enterprising with the shower busines!! We look forward to seeing the photos. Take care and continue the good work. Many thanks for the postcard too. Cate and family xx
